Embolisation: Embolisation UAE Treatment to shrink fibroids is now available throughout the UK
Fibroid Embolisation is an alternative to hysterectomy , which is now available throughout the UK, both on the NHS & Privately. We understand that this was the treatment of choice for Dr. Condoleezza Rice, National Security Advisor to the USA Government.
Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE) is a minimally invasive procedure which involves blocking the blood supply leading to the Fibroids so they shrink. In most cases this both shrinks the fibroids and reduces heavy menstrual bleeding
We have a reguarly updated list of where to obtain this treatment. It is also available worldwide . This article also has links to online web videos showing the embolisation procedure.

Embolisation: NEW HOPE TO WOMEN WITH SUB FERTILITY DUE TO FIBROIDS
Breakthrough research on pregnancy after fibroid embolisation was presented by Dr WJ Walker at the 30th British Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Glasgow this month.
Fibroids are common benign growths of the uterus (womb) which may cause sub fertility as well as symptoms such as heavy periods and/or compression of adjacent organs.
The Royal Surrey County Hospital/London Clinic trial is one of the largest Fibroid Embolisation trial in the world. Over 1000 patients have been treated since December 1996, with this non surgical technique (For details visit www.fibroids.co.uk
).
Within the trial 94 of patients with fibroids were wishing to become pregnant of which 45 (48%) became pregnant of these 31 (33%) pregnancies were successful (25) ongoing (6).

Your Messageboard: RADIO FREQUENCY ABLATION PROCEDURE
Guest writes "Hello,
I am new to the site. I am looking forward to the interactive message board. I have had a surgery in the past (unrelated) however I referred to a patients forum to gather information, and support. It was wonderful, and I depended on it in a very big way to get me through my surgery. I hope I will be as comfortable with this forum, as well.
My GYN has suggested a hysterectomy for my fibroid condition. I would like to investigate other alternatives. I will be meeting with a specialist who only deals with non-invasive procedures of Fibroids in the Uterus. We will discuss my condition, and RFA.
If anyone is familiar with this type of procedure and would like to discuss it, I would be very appreciative. We can post, or E-mail. Looking forward to getting more familiar with this website message board.
Stephanie from Baltimore, Maryland :)"

Hormone Treatments: Mirena Coil a contraceptive Device (Levonogesterol) used to treat Heavy Bleeding
The Mirena coil has been used to help with heavy bleeding and pain associated with fibroids. The coil was originally used just as a contraceptive device. Howver, some recent research showed that small fibroids sometimes reduced in size. It was also found to reduce Heavy Bleeding &/or pain. There is however a debate about whether high levels of the progesterone can increase the blood supply to the fibroids. We will be presenting research by Dr Ellen Grant soon as to whether or not Natural or Sythetic Progesterone is a safe alternative for fibroids

Fibroid Surgeries: Live Webcast Now of an Abdominal Myomectomy at Long Island College Hosp
Live Video of Myomectomy Surgery
Hello, This is a link to a fascinating Live video of an Abdominal Myomectomy
(Fibroid Removal surgery) by Dr Comrie on 23rd March. This is not for the faint
hearted. If you don't like live surgery , please don't watch but I thought some
people may find it interesting. There is a link on the page to the Drs comments
which you can watch instead. Once again its very graphic . The ladies
interviewed on the video went onto have children after their myomectomies. Lots
of fibroids are removed. The operation is on a 40 yr old woman who wants to have
further children
There's a lot of info about fibroids presented with the clip in powerpoint
& by the narrators as they carry out the procedure. If you can't watch , you
could just listen

Fibroid Surgeries: Ultrasound is it the new Non-Surgical Fibroid Treatment
A new non-sugical treatment for fibroids is being trialled at the Brigham Womens hospital, Boston, USA. They are using an ultrasound beam to produce thermal(heat) energy to destroy the fibroid, whilst using an MRI scanner to view the progress. Its still in very early clinical trials. It has been tried on women with fibroids but there are no long term figures available yet. The Brigham's Women's Hospital, (Boston) initial trials were on 55 women who were due to have hysterectomy. Not everyone had the full ultrasound treatment but for those that did it seemed to be effective. They then had their scheduled hysterectomies The reports say that there were no major complications. There were some women who didnt want a hysterectomy after the ultrasound procedure. They will be monitoring them to see whether any fibroid reduction is permanent & if any complications develop. Advantages of the procedure include shorter recovery times & it may be a new alternative to hysterectomy (womb removal).
